A long journey
- Pachisi — a cross-shaped race game from India, played for centuries with cowrie shells as dice.
- Ludo — a simplified version patented in England in 1896, played with a die.
- Mensch ärgere Dich nicht — “Man, don't get annoyed” — a German version from the early 20th century. Its first word gave Iran's game its name: Mench.
The basic rules
Roll a 6 to bring a piece out; move one piece per roll; a 6 gives another roll; landing on another player's piece sends it back to its base; the first to bring all four pieces home wins.
Simple tactics
- Bring several pieces out early, so you have choices later.
- Avoid stopping just in front of an opponent's piece.
- When you can, send a piece home that is close to finishing.
- Keep the game friendly — it's in the name!
