Hokm (“order” or “command”) is a partnership card game for four, loved in homes across Iran. Here is how it works.

Teams and deal

Four players sit in two teams, partners opposite each other. One player is the hakem (the ruler). The hakem receives five cards first and, looking only at those, chooses the hokm — the trump suit. The rest of the cards are then dealt until everyone has thirteen.

Playing a trick

  1. Lead

The hakem leads the first trick by playing any card.

  2. Follow suit

Everyone must play a card of the suit that was led, if they have one.

  3. Trump or discard

A player without the led suit may play a trump or any other card.

  4. Win the trick

The highest trump wins; if no trump was played, the highest card of the led suit wins. The winner leads next.

Winning

  • The first team to take 7 tricks wins the hand.
  • Winning 7–0 is a kot, worth extra points — more if the hakem's own team is shut out.
  • If the hakem's team loses a hand, the hakem role passes on.

Tips

  • As hakem, choose the suit where you hold the most, and the strongest, cards.
  • Don't waste a high card when your partner is already winning the trick.
  • Count the trumps that have been played.
